Tillman Thomas is the new man in charge after taking the Grenada elections by storm, blown in by the winds of change that have been sweeping across the Caribbean.
He took over the post of Prime Minister when his National Democratic Congress (NDC), won 11 out of the 15 parliamentary seats up for grabs in the July 8 poll. Thomas, 63, was sworn in as head of government a day later to become the island’s eighth Prime Minister.
Taking over from Dr. Keith Mitchell of the New National Party (NNP), the newly elected Grenadian leader says the NDC is fully aware of the challenges ahead with the spiralling energy prices and the high cost of living. He is confident however that the party's fresh policies can set the country on a growth path.
Thomas said his government will be one for all of Grenada, reiterating that his administration would place much emphasis on good governance.
“Expanding the productive sectors of the economy particularly agriculture, we also want to look at getting serious training projects for our young people. We also want to invest heavily in the human resource of the country,” Thomas said, adding that his government will be willing to incorporate the projects of the NNP.
Four days after being appointed, Thomas named a 17-member Cabinet.
Thomas was a founding member of the NDC in 1987 and was appointed as its assistant general secretary between 1987 and 1990. He also served as junior minister in the ministries of Legal Affairs and Labour, and as minister in the ministries of Works and Tourism.
