KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – National Security Minister Colonel Trevor MacMillian says the Jamaica government will soon announce a crime plan.
MacMillian told the Senate on Friday that he would outline the plan in an address to the nation. He gave no date for the broadcast even as the number of persons killed here so far this year reached almost 650.
"The Ministry of National Security is working with the security forces to implement a multi-dimensional response to the problem and in the next few days we will be making an address to the nation to provide a full account of the strategies that will be employed by the security forces.
“We are fully aware that we must seek to address the deep social maladies underlying the current crime problem and in this regard we are moving quickly to implement a comprehensive social intervention programme in vulnerable and volatile communities across Jamaica,” he told the Senate.
His announcement came hours after the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) called on the government to deal decisively with the growing crime situation in the country.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding had earlier said that the development of the crime plan was the responsibility of the police Commissioner.
